This wine was rated 93 points (on the cusp of gold medal status) by The National Cool Climate Wine Show chief judge and Victorian Wine Show Director Robert Paul. That puts it in the top 5% of wines, which is very difficult to achieve.
The Grampians region is considered one of Australia’s great Riesling areas, with good reason. The last four “Best Riesling” trophies at the Victorian Wine Show have gone to producers in this area. The higher altitude, cold nights and very warm days, the great rocky soils and above all else the lively acidity of the wines from the “Terroir” that is the Grampians gives great balance and longevity to the Rieslings from this area.
The Wild Fire 2020 Grampians Riesling is a worthy successor to our outstanding 2019 wine that was awarded Silver at the last Victorian Wine Show, and was included in the top five Rieslings in the trophy taste off. Three of the other four Rieslings were also from the Grampians area.
The 2020 Riesling has a nose showing lifted lemon blossom, spice and apple. The palate exhibits delicious fruit character, a beautiful acid backbone and a long and sustained finish. Although slightly higher in acid compared to the 2019 wine, the retention of some residual fruit sugar has given satisfying balance to the mid-palate and an excellent dry finish.
This wine is made to drink. It is great with spicy Thai dishes, curries or seafood. Enjoy as an aperitif or as a great drink at the end of the day. It will age gracefully for 10+ years and will develop classic “aged” Riesling characters over time.
